Breakers

The series was produced with the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games in mind, as the program 'Tensai TV-kun YOU' had already repeatedly aired specials and accompanying programs on the subject of para-sports. 'Breakers' was created as part of the anime programming block of this program to educate about para-sports.

The series is divided into four self-contained stories of four episodes each, each 9 minutes long, each dealing with a different para-sport: wheelchair basketball, para-athletics (high jump), goalball, and para-swimming.

For each of the four sports, real Paralympic athletes were brought in as consultants and guest performers, including wheelchair basketball player Renji Toriumi, high jumper Tōru Suzuki, goalball player Eiko Kabata, and swimmer Takuro Yamada.

For the production, specialists and associations were collaborated with for each of the four stories, such as the Japan Wheelchair Basketball Association, the Japan Goalball Association, and the Japan Association for Swimming of People with Physical Disabilities, to support research.

Direction changed several times over the course of the series: Masaki Nishikawa directed episodes 1 to 8, followed by Tomohiro Matsukawa for episodes 9 to 12, and Yuki Watanabe for episodes 13 to 16.

The title song 'SUPER HERO' is by the band BugLug, which also composed all the music for the series; band member Issei wrote the lyrics and music for the song, with the arrangement handled by BugLug themselves.

Even after the end of the first broadcast in May 2020, the series continued to be made available through the educational platform NHK for School until the 2025 school year.
