Series creator Rachael New drew inspiration for the character of Eliza Scarlet from Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

The first series was filmed in Dublin, Ireland, with exteriors of Eliza's home shot on Mount Pleasant Square, Ranelagh, and the distinctive green dome of Mary Immaculate, Refuge of Sinners Church in Rathmines visible in some street scenes.

The police station where the Duke works was actually filmed at the CBS Westland Row in Cumberland Street, Dublin.

Starting with series 2, production of the show moved from Dublin to Belgrade, Serbia, where it has remained as of series 5.

Actor Stuart Martin made the personal decision to leave the show after series 4, feeling that his character William 'the Duke' Wellington was holding back Eliza's story and that the character had gone as far as he could within the series.

Following Stuart Martin's departure, the show was retitled from 'Miss Scarlet and The Duke' to simply 'Miss Scarlet' starting with series 5, and Tom Durant-Pritchard joined as a replacement character, Inspector Alexander Blake.

The show's creators chose not to kill off Stuart Martin's character William Wellington when he left, explaining it would have been 'too final, too cruel for Eliza, for the audience' and would have limited the show's future options.

Kristen Lopez of IndieWire praised the first season's brevity, noting that its five 50-minute episodes created a breathless blend of mystery-of-the-week storytelling and overarching plot, with Kate Phillips' performance singled out as enthralling.
