Louis la Brocante

The character of Louis Roman was created specifically for actor Victor Lanoux, with writers Pierre Sisser and Jacques Rouzet basing him on roles Lanoux had previously played and on his own personality traits like generosity and a fiery but non-violent temper.

The first episode was shot in northern France (Hauts-de-France, in the Aisne and Nord departments, including Guise and Lille), before production moved permanently to the Lyon region for subsequent episodes.

From season 3 onward, the château de la Combe in Irigny served as the main filming location, housing Louis's home/shop ('Le Terrier'), the mother superior's convent, and the count's château; production had to leave in 2010 when the owner sold the property to be converted into apartments, forcing a move to the Château de Noailleux for the final three episodes.

During the filming of episode 35 ('Louis et les pots cassés') in October 2007, Victor Lanoux suffered a stroke; since scenes were not shot in chronological order, the episode shows him abruptly shifting between a healthy-looking Louis and a visibly weakened, thinner character with a hoarse voice, a condition he kept for the rest of the series after production paused for months to allow his recovery.

For episode 36 ('Louis voit double'), Victor Lanoux, still recovering from his stroke, had to walk with a cane, which was explained in-story as sciatica.

While filming the episode 'Louis et Violette', director Pierre Sisser was arrested by police after being pulled over speeding while carrying a shoebox full of fake 500-franc bills needed as props; he was released after explanations but arrived an hour late to the shoot.

The series lost several cast and crew members during production: actor Sim (Théo de Montalenvert) died in September 2009, gendarme actor Armand Chagot died in November 2010, mother superior actress Nadia Barentin died in March 2011, and co-creator Pierre Sisser died in May 2011; several episodes were dedicated to them following their final appearances.

Victor Lanoux announced he would quit the series in 2007 at age 71, feeling he was no longer credible in the role, but returned in 2010 to film two more episodes before permanently stopping after episode 44 in 2012, at age 77.

Several actors from the series Kaamelott, including Lionnel Astier, Joëlle Sévilla, Nicolas Gabion, Christian Bujeau, Jacques Chambon, Loïc Varraut and Serge Papagalli, made guest appearances in various episodes of Louis la Brocante.

The episode 'Louis voit double', broadcast as a tribute to actor Sim on 24 September 2009 following his death and featuring his final on-screen appearance, gathered 5.2 million viewers, representing a 21.2% audience share.
