Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The series originated from an off-the-cuff phone call when Netflix's John Derderian asked director Jay Oliva during a writer's summit for the show Trese if he knew anything about Norse mythology, prompting Oliva to invent a story on the spot.

Origins

Netflix then suggested Oliva team up with his previous collaborator Zack Snyder, who was already working with Netflix on several projects, and the two developed the concept together before bringing on Eric Carrasco as head writer.

Origins

Zack Snyder first revealed in 2019 that he had plans for an animated series based on Norse mythology, and he and Oliva were announced as directors that July, with Oliva serving as showrunner.

Origins

The title Twilight of the Gods and its cast list were only officially revealed two years later, on June 10, 2021, during Netflix's Geeked Week event, presented by Snyder and cast member Rahul Kohli.

Filming

A new studio called KRAKN Animation, a joint venture between Jay Oliva and Louis-Simon Menard, was formed in June 2021 specifically to create the animation for the series, which was later produced with French studio Xilam Animation using a 2D animation style.

Filming

Most of the voice recording took place during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed remotely across 23 locations worldwide, with actors using special home recording kits and filming themselves on camera to help the animators.

Casting

Rahul Kohli had already finished recording his voice lines back in 2020 or 2021, long before the series' eventual 2024 release.

Casting

Jessica Henwick joined the cast as Sandraudiga, with her casting announced in June 2024, well after the original ensemble was revealed in 2021.

Trivia

Around 50 different character designs were created in-house by the art team, including some in 3D, as the creators aimed for an animation style that felt unique rather than imitating anime or Pixar.

Music

Composer Hans Zimmer was revealed in June 2024 to be scoring the series' music.

Reception

The series holds a 76% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 17 critic reviews, with the consensus praising its vivid animation and godly carnage but noting its constant intensity saps some emotional depth; Metacritic gave it a 63/100 based on 9 critics.

Trivia

Despite its ambitious development, Netflix canceled Twilight of the Gods in November 2025 after just one season.
