The series was developed independently from and in the same period as the theatrical film Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, spearheaded by producer Hiroyuki Sakurada and director Masato Mitsuka, who had previously worked together on Digimon Fusion and Dragon Ball Super.

Sakurada had hoped for a reboot of the original Digimon Adventure since the days of Digimon Adventure tri., and wanted to secure the same Sunday 9 a.m. Fuji TV timeslot the original series had aired in.

The original Digimon Adventure staff, who were busy working on the movie Last Evolution Kizuna, were not consulted for this reboot project.

All the voice actors for the DigiDestined children were entirely recast with new performers, while nearly all the partner Digimon kept their original 1999 voice actors, with the exception of Gatomon.

For the English dub, the entire cast was replaced, including Tai's original voice actor Joshua Seth, who said producers informed the cast months in advance that no one from the old cast would return.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the broadcast of new episodes was suspended from April 26, 2020, delaying episode 4 and beyond by about two months until the show resumed on June 28, 2020; reruns of GeGeGe no Kitarō and earlier Digimon Adventure episodes filled the gap.

Composer Toshihiko Sahashi was commissioned to write forty compositions performed by a large orchestra, with the first recording session held on February 25, 2020.

The fifth ending theme, 'Dreamers,' was performed by the K-pop boy band Ateez, and for the first time in the franchise's history, the English dub reused the original Japanese opening and two ending themes (sung in English by Cristina Vee and Jenny Karr) instead of creating new songs.

Anime News Network named Digimon Adventure: one of 'The Worst Anime of 2020,' criticizing its lack of planning, while Toei Animation itself admitted in May 2021 that the series struggled to attract new young audiences, officially blaming the COVID-19 pandemic.

Promotional images for episode 38, 'The Blazing Blue Friendship,' depicting crucifixion imagery, went viral online and spread widely through memes among fans and nostalgic viewers.
