La Révolution

The series was conceived by writers Aurélien Molas and Gaia Guasti, who drew inspiration from a quote attributed to Napoleon Bonaparte: "History is a tissue of lies that we agree upon." They wanted to write an alternate history about the French Revolution period by imagining that a hidden truth lay behind the known events.

Filming took place in the Vexin in Val-d'Oise and in Rambouillet in Yvelines in May 2019, then on the beach at Vieille église in Barneville-Carteret in Manche in September 2019.

The scenes of the fictional village were shot at the Bry-sur-Marne Studios in Val-de-Marne, while the Chaalis estate in Oise served as the set for the interior scenes of the Montargis family home.

For greater authenticity, the series team visited several historical locations, such as the châteaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte and Fontainebleau in Seine-et-Marne.

Following the commercial failure of the first season, Netflix announced the cancellation of the series on January 14, 2021, through an interview with Damien Couvreur, director of Netflix's original French series.

The series trailer was unveiled on July 14, 2020, French national holiday commemorating the storming of the Bastille, an emblematic event of the French Revolution.

Critical reception was overwhelmingly negative: for Thomas Sotinel of Le Monde, the series is "a fiasco," while Sandrine Bajos of Le Parisien denounces "too much hemoglobin, too many inconsistencies, too many clichés and unconvincing casting."
