Will Freeman est un trentenaire londonien et un célibataire endurci. Vivant allègrement grâce aux droits d'auteur qu'il perçoit sur une chanson de Noël écrite par son père, il s'invente un fils pour draguer des mères célibataires.Un jour, il fait la connaissance de Marcus, un garçon de douze ans, fils de Fiona, hippie et végétarienne, et tête de Turc de l'école. Will et Marcus deviennent amis, et pendant que Will apprend à Marcus l'art d'être cool, Marcus apprend à Will l'art d'être... adulte.

Genèse

Le film est une adaptation du roman éponyme de Nick Hornby publié en 1998, réalisée par les frères Paul et Chris Weitz qui ont co-écrit le scénario avec Peter Hedges.

Musique

La bande originale a été composée par le chanteur-compositeur Badly Drawn Boy et est sortie le 23 avril 2002, incluant également de la musique tirée du jeu télévisé Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, composée par Keith Strachan et Matthew Strachan.

Casting

Le tournage a marqué un changement notable dans l'apparence physique de Hugh Grant, alors âgé de 41 ans, qui avait perdu du poids et abandonné sa coiffure emblématique aux cheveux ébouriffés pour un look plus court et plus mature.

Le film a ouvert la première édition du Tribeca Festival à New York le 8 mai 2002, avant sa sortie officielle aux États-Unis et au Canada le 17 mai 2002.
