È lontano il tempo in cui Tim Goodman sognava di fare l'allenatore di Pokémon. Ora, a ventidue anni, lavora nella assicurazioni, e ai Pokémon non ci penserebbe più, o quasi, se la morte del padre, un famoso investigatore, non lo richiamasse a Ryme City, la metropoli dove umani e Pokémon vivono fianco a fianco. Crede che sia soltanto l'ora di dire addio ad un genitore che non ha mai veramente conosciuto, ma c'è del marcio nell'incidente che ha portato alla scomparsa di Harry Goodman, e il giovane Tim si trova a far squadra con il partner del padre, l'irresistibile Pikachu, per far luce su un mistero che assume tinte e dimensioni sempre più inquietanti.

L'idea dei Pokémon parlanti risale a un concetto iniziale della serie TV degli anni '90, ma fu scartata perché Game Freak non era soddisfatta del concetto; l'idea fu poi ripresa per il videogioco spin-off Detective Pikachu del 2016.

Il progetto nacque da una guerra di offerte nell'aprile 2016 che portò Legendary Entertainment ad acquisire i diritti cinematografici di Pokémon, in collaborazione con The Pokémon Company, con l'intento di realizzare un film incentrato su un personaggio diverso da Ash Ketchum.

Cast

Per il ruolo di Pikachu furono presi in considerazione anche Danny DeVito, Dwayne Johnson, Mark Wahlberg e Hugh Jackman, prima che la parte fosse assegnata a Ryan Reynolds nel dicembre 2017.

Cast

Kathryn Newton ottenne il ruolo di Lucy Stevens superando le audizioni di Natalia Dyer, Haley Lu Richardson e Katherine Langford.

Riprese

Sul set, l'interazione con Pikachu era resa tramite un pupazzo manovrato da Mikey Brett, con Cornelius Geaney Jr. che forniva i dialoghi di riferimento vocale in diretta tramite auricolari, permettendo a Justice Smith di sentire le battute senza che venissero captate dai microfoni di scena; tutto il dialogo temporaneo fu poi ridoppiato da Ryan Reynolds.

Riprese

Il direttore della fotografia John Mathieson ha girato il film su pellicola tradizionale anziché in digitale, scelta che secondo lui rende il risultato visivamente più realistico.

Effetti

Gli effetti visivi sono stati realizzati dallo stesso team che ha lavorato a Il libro della giungla, Animali fantastici e dove trovarli e Il Re Leone; il regista Rob Letterman ha paragonato la qualità degli effetti a quella di Rocket Raccoon in Guardiani della Galassia.

Curiosità

Nel maggio 2019, Warner Bros. e Ryan Reynolds hanno organizzato uno scherzo pubblicando su YouTube un finto video pirata del film, in gran parte composto da Pikachu che balla aerobica su una musica synthwave anni '80, ottenendo 4,2 milioni di visualizzazioni in meno di un giorno.

Accoglienza

Il film fu il primo adattamento cinematografico da videogioco a mantenere una valutazione 'fresh' su Rotten Tomatoes e, per un periodo, il più apprezzato adattamento da videogioco sul sito, prima di essere superato da The Angry Birds Movie 2.

Tiene la virtud Detective Pikachu solventar desde el inicio el principal escollo que tenia la adaptación de un juego de lucha entre mascotas adorables, imaginad por un instante un blockbuster basado en peleas de perros, obviarlas y dejar claro que ahora los Pokémon son compañeros de los humanos, y centrarse en un trama detectivesca sencilla, no en vano es una película para niños, que permite además mostrar el espectacular diseño de los Pokémon de una manera fluida e integrada en la narración. En definitiva una pelicula basada en la química entre Pikachu y su compañero, bastante lograda, que funciona muy bien cómo lo que realmente es, una película infantil.
