A unicorn learns from a riddle-speaking butterfly that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the monstrous Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.

豆知識と制作秘話

企画

原作者ピーター・S・ビーグルは当初、この作品はアニメーションでしか映像化できないと考えており、実写映画にすることは考えていなかった。

企画

『ピーナッツ』のテレビスペシャルで知られるリー・メンデルソンとビル・メレンデスが早くから映画化に関心を示していたが、ビーグルはそのパートナーの妻から「彼らでは力不足だ」と説得され、話は流れた。

企画

映画化を持ちかけたランキン・バス・プロダクションズは、実は候補の中で最後にアプローチしてきたスタジオであり、ビーグルはそのことを知らされた時「恐怖を感じた」と述べている。

完成した映画は脚本のほぼ最終稿に忠実だったが、王女との出会いを描く終盤のシーンはアニメ化されたものの、最終的にカットされた。

撮影

作画は東京のトップクラフトで行われ、東映動画出身のToru Haraが率い、飯塚正水（Masaki Iizuka）が制作を統括した。同スタジオは後に宮崎駿から『風の谷のナウシカ』の制作を依頼され、その中心メンバーはのちにスタジオジブリを設立した。

キャスト

キング・ハガード役のクリストファー・リーは撮影に自ら原作小説を持参し、省略すべきでないと考えるセリフに印を付けていた。リーはドイツ語も堪能だったため、ドイツ語吹替版でも同じ役を演じた。

モリー・グルー役の背景描写は特に詳しく書かれていなかったが、演者タミー・グライムズが声に生命を吹き込んだことで、原作者ビーグルが書ききれなかった部分を補ってくれたと語っている。

木の精役はネリー・ベルフラワーがクレジットされてきたが、彼女の演じたシーンは実際には最終版に採用されておらず、長年にわたり誤ったクレジットが定着していたことがブルーレイの特典映像で明らかにされた。

音楽

音楽はジミー・ウェッブが作曲・編曲し、グループ「アメリカ」とロンドン交響楽団が演奏、追加ボーカルをルーシー・ミッチェルが担当した。サウンドトラックは1982年にイギリス・ウェンブリーのデ・レーン・リー・スタジオで録音された。

評価

興行的には振るわず、全米648館で公開され初週末25万ドルを稼いだものの、北米興収は総計645万5330ドルにとどまった一方、批評家からは概ね好意的な評価を受け、後にカルト的な人気を獲得した。

評価

2007年発売の『25周年記念版』DVDはドイツ版のビデオマスターと音声ミックスを使用したため、PAL方式由来で本編が本来より4%速く再生され、音のピッチがわずかに高くなるという問題があった。この不具合は2011年のブルーレイ版で修正された。

評価

研究者たちは、この作品が多くのクィアやトランスジェンダーの視聴者にとって特にLGBTQの経験に響く作品として受け止められてきたことを記録している。
