배트맨은 고담시를 구하러 돌아와 이제까지 보지 못한 막강한 악당들과 대결하게 된다. 천재적인 두뇌를 가진 복수의 화신 펭귄맨과 부도덕한 백만장자 사업가 맥스 슈렉이 그 장본인들. 펭귄맨은 충성스러운 펭귄 군단과 붉은 서커스단을 동원, 고담시와 고담시의 수호신 배트맨을 없애려 한다. 그러나 배트맨에게 더 큰 위협을 주는 존재는 신비하고 매력적이지만, 몹시 위험한 캣우먼의 도전이다. 배트맨처럼 아픈 과거를 간직한 캣우먼은 막강한 파워, 지성, 그리고 신비스러운 비밀을 가지고 배트맨에게 접근하고, 배트맨과 캣우먼은 서로 묘한 감정을 느낀다.

기획

Warner Bros.는 Batman (1989)의 Gotham City 세트를 Pinewood Studios에서 24시간 감시 아래 유지하기 위해 200만 달러를 투자했으며, 속편을 위해 재사용할 의도였지만 Tim Burton이 미국에서 촬영하기로 결정하면서 결국 버려졌다.

기획

작가 Sam Hamm의 원래 기획안은 Harvey Dent의 Two-Face로의 변신에 초점을 맞췄지만 Warner Bros.는 Penguin을 주요 악당으로 밀어붙였고, Hamm의 두 번의 초안은 Burton의 관심을 불태우지 못해 Burton이 Edward Scissorhands와 The Nightmare Before Christmas를 추구하게 되었다.

기획

Burton은 Batman 프로듀서 Peter Guber과 Jon Peters의 떠남 이후 더 많은 창작 통제권을 부여받은 후에만 복귀에 동의했으며, 나중에 첫 번째 Batman을 자신의 영화 중 가장 마음에 들지 않는 작품이라고 부르며 '때때로 지루하다'고 표현했다.

캐스팅

Burton은 원래 Penguin 역할로 Marlon Brando를 원했던 반면 Warner Bros.는 Dustin Hoffman을 선호했고, Christopher Lloyd와 Robert De Niro도 고려되었으나 결국 Danny DeVito가 캐스팅되었으며, 그의 친구 Jack Nicholson이 그를 설득한 것으로 알려져 있다.

Annette Bening은 원래 Catwoman으로 캐스팅되었으나 임신으로 인해 하차했고, 고려된 다른 후보로는 Cher, Madonna, Susan Sarandon, 그리고 손수 만든 Catwoman 의상을 입고 즉흥적으로 오디션을 펼친 Sean Young이 있었으며, Burton은 이때 책상 아래로 숨어 있었다고 전해진다.

Michelle Pfeiffer는 스턴트 더블 Kathy Long과 함께 몇 개월간 킥복싱과 채찍 다루기 훈련을 받았으며, 많은 채찍 스턴트를 직접 수행할 수 있을 정도로 숙련되었다.

캐스팅

Marlon Wayans는 Robin 역할로 캐스팅되었으나 해당 캐릭터가 대본에서 완전히 삭제되었으며, 영화에 출연하지 않았음에도 불구하고 그의 2편 계약에 따라 계속 잔금을 받았다.

촬영

하수도 장면에서 오르간 그라인더 원숭이가 Danny DeVito를 완전히 Penguin 의상과 분장 상태로 보고 직접 그의 사타구니로 뛰어들었으나, 패딩이 입혀진 의상이 그를 보호했다.

Emperor, 검은발, 그리고 King 펭귄들이 냉장 비행기로 운송되었고 냉각된 세트에 보관되었으며, 이는 PETA의 항의를 촉발했고 소금물 작은 수영장에 갇혀 담수를 마실 수 없는 등의 학대 행위가 지적되었다.

효과

Catwoman이 살아있는 새를 입에 물고 있는 장면은 CGI 없이 실제로 촬영되었으며, Michelle Pfeiffer는 나중에 부상이나 질병의 위험성 때문에 이 스턴트를 다시 반복하지 않겠다고 말했다.

Enrique Cerezo es el tipo más rico de Gotham y como Almeida no está disponible intenta hacer alcalde de Gotham al Pingüino para llevar a cabo el plan más cutre de la historia de las películas de superhéroes. También aparece Batman (pero poco) y Catwoman, cuyo origen es básicamente que la tiren por una ventana y la muerdan unos gatos radiactivos que la convierten en una chica horny que da más grima que una tuistar haciéndose el selfie ese tumbada en la cama para que no se vea que están gordas. Al final ganan los buenos mientras suena TODO EL PUTO RATO la puta música de Danny Elfman y el superplan de bombardear la ciudad con 🐧armados con cohetes se va al carajo. Un sindios al que le sobra media hora.
