In the distant future on the planet Earl, colonized by immigrants from Earth centuries ago. "Old technology" has survived in the form of nanomachines that allow female virgins wield Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment (HiME) and become Meister Otomes - bodyguards and warriors that serve the royalty of various kingdoms. Arika Yumemiya has come to Windbloom Kingdom in search of her mother, whom Arika knows was an Otome. On her arrival she meets the top Coral Otome student, Nina Wáng, and Windbloom's heir to the throne, Mashiro Blan de Windbloom. The series follows Arika's progress as a student at Garderobe Academy and the machinations of those desiring the destructive power of the old technology for themselves.

기획

My-Otome는 Mai-HiME 시리즈의 두 번째 프로젝트로 기획되었으며, 사내적으로 'Mai-HiME 극단, 2번째 공연'으로 명명되었다. 고전적인 속편 대신, 이 시리즈는 일본 애니메에서 드문 '스타 시스템'을 사용하며, 여기서 캐릭터들은 Mai-HiME와의 내용상 연결 없이 배우처럼 재사용된다.

기획

원래 발표된 시리즈의 작업 제목은 'Mai☆MAiD'(Mai-Star-Maid)였으나 나중에 Mai-Otome로 변경되었다.

레퍼런스

'BACK STAGE'라는 팬샵 체인의 이름은 우주 내에서 '무대/백스테이지'를 의미하며, 시리즈의 스타 시스템 개념의 연극적이고 배우다운 성격을 의도적으로 암시한다.

시리즈의 국가 Romulus와 Lemus는 전설에 따르면 로마를 건설한 전설적인 쌍둥이 형제의 이름을 따른 것이며, 고대 신화와 마찬가지로 두 국가 간의 관계는 Lemus가 Romulus에게 살해당하면서 갈등으로 끝난다.

비밀 테러 조직 'Schwarz'는 검은색을 의미하는 독일어에서 이름을 따왔으며, 관련 조직 'Aswad'는 검은색을 의미하는 아랍어에서 이름을 유래했다.

애니메에서 'Akatsuki no Daitachi'라는 특수 무기가 등장하며, 그 디자인은 원래 GEAR Senshi Dendoh 시리즈에서 나온 것으로, 여기서 유사한 Akatsuki no Daitachi라는 무기가 있었다.
