Agent Strahm is overleden, en detective Hoffman wordt naar voren geschoven als de onbetwiste opvolger van Jigsaw's erfenis aan gruwelijkheden, waaronder weer een van te voren opgezet plan waarin gevangenen zich moeten bewijzen tegenover de zonden die ze zijn begaan. Wanneer de FBI bijna op het punt staat om Hoffman te arresteren, zet hij een nieuw spel in werking, met daarin de laatste wensen van Jigsaw die ter uitvoering moeten worden gebracht.

Ontstaan

'Saw VI' is het speelfilmdebuut van Kevin Greutert, die eerder verantwoordelijk was voor de montage van alle films in de reeks. Greutert stelt dat de overgang van montage naar regisseur gemakkelijk verliep omdat hij veel ervaring had met kortefilmproductie en gesprekken met producers.

Ontstaan

In de vroege fase van het script werd overwogen dat rechercheur Hoffman tegen de mafia zou optreden, maar dit werd snel verworpen omdat het niet in de 'Saw'-stijl paste en meer op 'The Punisher' zou lijken.

Een week voordat de opnames zouden beginnen, werd Greutert door distributeur Lions Gate verteld dat de film in 3D zou worden omgezet. Dit schrok Greutert, die alles in 2D had ontworpen. Dit 3D-conversieplan werd later vanwege tijdsdruk opgegeven.

Casting

In de realityshow 'Scream Queens' op VH1 (uitgezonden in 2008) competeerden 10 onbekende actrices om een rol in deze film. De winnaar, Tanedra Howard, veroverde de rol van Simone. Zij herhaalde deze rol ook in het vervolg 'Saw 3D'.

Casting

De flashbackscènes van Amanda Young werden niet zoals eerder opnieuw gebruikt uit vorige films, maar speciaal voor deze film opgenomen.

Regisseur Greutert wilde dat dokter Lawrence Gordon, gespeeld door Cary Elwes, in deze film terugkeerde, maar Elwes' agenda stond dit niet toe. Later speelde Elwes deze rol in 'Saw 3D', maar de uitwerking was anders dan oorspronkelijk door Greutert bedacht.

Opnames

De film werd geproduceerd met een budget van 11 miljoen dollar en werd van maart tot mei 2009 opgenomen in Cinespace Film Studios in Toronto.

Effecten

De carouselval zou oorspronkelijk door 10 acteurs bevolkt worden, maar werd uiteindelijk tot 6 teruggebracht om aan te sluiten bij het getal '6' in de filmtitel. Greutert noemde deze scène de 'langste valscène' van de hele reeks tot dan toe.

Opnames

De Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) vroeg om enkele fragmenten uit de openingsscène waarin Simone en Eddie hun eigen vlees snijden te verwijderen voor een R-rating. In Spanje kreeg de film een leeftijdsbeperking vanwege gewelddadige beelden, en het aantal bioscopen waar de film draaide werd beperkt tot 8.
