Drama

Ontstaan

Belgravia is adapted from Julian Fellowes' 2016 novel of the same name; both the series and the novel are named after the affluent Belgravia district of London.

Ontstaan

The production brought together the team behind Downton Abbey: Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant took on producing duties alongside Liz Trubridge and Julian Fellowes, and the series was produced as a joint production between Carnival Films and the American cable channel Epix.

Ontstaan

ITV announced its approval of the six-episode series on 14 January 2019; on 8 February 2019, it was announced that Epix had joined the project as co-producer.

Opnames

Principal photography took place in the summer of 2019, and most of the exterior scenes were filmed in the New Town area of Edinburgh, which represented the Belgravia district.

Opnames

Scenes set in Brussels were filmed at Hopetoun House in West Lothian, Wrest Park in Bedfordshire (chapel scenes) and Bath Assembly Hall (ballroom scenes).

Opnames

The exterior of the Trenchard family home was filmed at Moray Place in Edinburgh, while most of the interiors were filmed at a country house in Berwickshire, at Basildon Park and at Syon House in London.

Opnames

Since Anne Trenchard's country house is fictional, filming for these scenes took place at Loseley Park, a country house in Guildford.

Opnames

The production also filmed at Historic Chatham Dockyard; Anchor Wharf and Tarred Yarn Store were used as Pimm's Chop House, and the streets around the Ropery represented both a London market and the streets around Girton's Mill.

Ontvangst

The series received a 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 36 reviews, with the site's summary noting that the series, while 'somewhat silly', would satisfy fans seeking a new period melodrama to enjoy with tea; Metacritic gave it a weighted average score of 70 out of 100 based on 15 critics.
