The series was created in the early 1990s after Turner acquired Hanna-Barbera, as part of annual initiatives to explore old characters, also including a live-action film and two planned television movies.

Originally titled 'Jonny Quest's Extraordinary Adventures' by Peter Lawrence, the series only received its final title in 1995.

After eighteen months of troubled production, with only eight reels ready by March 1995 (out of 65 planned episodes), Hanna-Barbera fired creator Peter Lawrence and art director Takashi Masunaga in 1996, hiring a new team to finish the remaining 26 episodes under the name 'The New Jonny Quest'.

The Buzz F/X animation team, hired to create the CGI sequences of QuestWorld, worked up to 14 hours a day, seven days a week, in a small garage with inadequate computers, and ended up going bankrupt in 1997 due to a debt of 3.6 million dollars generated by the work on the series.

The Dream Quest Images studio, initially hired to animate QuestWorld, only managed to credit one episode before being acquired by Disney in April 1996, forcing production to seek another supplier.

Don Messick was hired to reprise his classic role as Dr. Quest in the second season, but a stroke during the first recording sessions forced him into retirement.

Michael Benyaer, voice actor for Hadji, is a Star Wars fan and was happy to work with Mark Hamill in the episode 'In the Realm of the Condor'.

The planners were inspired by cyberpunk novels by Neal Stephenson and William Gibson, including 'Snow Crash', to create the concept of QuestWorld.

Dark Horse Comics released a 12-issue series based on the production, and cartoonist Paul Chadwick, an Eisner Award winner and longtime fan of Jonny Quest, illustrated the cover of the final issue.
