The series was cancelled by the BBC on February 12, 2024, after two seasons.

The series was commissioned by the BBC in October 2017, with Peter Bowker as creator and screenwriter.

The cast began to be assembled in October 2018, with Helen Hunt and Lesley Manville among the first hires, followed by Sean Bean in November of the same year.

Filming of the first season began in November 2018 and ended in March 2019, with locations in Chester, Liverpool, Prague, Lytham St. Annes, Wigan and Lyme Park.

The second season began filming in July 2022 in Belfast, after a long delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with additional filming occurring in December of that year.

Sean Bean did not return for the second season due to scheduling conflicts, while Helen Hunt and Brian J. Smith did not return because their characters no longer fit the story; Bowker hoped they could return in a third season, since 1942 would mark the beginning of American involvement in the war.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season has an approval rating of 84% with an average score of 7.6/10, while the second season achieved 100% approval with an average score of 7.2/10.

Despite positive reviews, the historical accuracy of some elements of the series was criticized by reviewers, including columnist Peter Hitchens.
