Universal Pictures was criticized for removing actors Faizon Love and Kali Hawk from the film's international posters, displaying only six of the eight cast members used in U.S. promotional materials; the studio said it regretted this and abandoned plans to use the revised poster in other countries. In 2020, Faizon Love sued Universal for racial discrimination and whitewashing due to the continued use of the offensive poster.

Ex-model Irina Krupnik sued the film's producers for 10 million dollars for alleged violation of privacy, claiming that Jon Favreau's character uses a photo of her in a masturbation scene; the Manhattan Supreme Court judge ruled against her, and she received no compensation.

Universal Pictures made commercial partnerships to promote the film, including the Tahiti Tourism Board (where it was filmed), the manufacturers of Bud Light and Captain Morgan's Rum, the department store Bloomingdale's, and the Crunch Gyms fitness chain.

Despite negative reviews, the film was a box office success, leading the U.S. opening weekend with 34.3 million dollars and becoming Vince Vaughn's biggest box office success since 'The Break-Up' (2006), earning a total of about 171 million dollars worldwide.
