The screenplay was written by William Goldman, who worked on several versions throughout 1995 and later described the process in his memoir 'Which Lie Did I Tell?'. The worldwide rights to the book and film were sold for approximately 5 million dollars.

When Clint Eastwood learned that the novel would be adapted for the cinema, he liked the plot and characters, but did not like the fact that most of the interesting characters died. He asked William Goldman to ensure that 'everyone the audience likes is not killed'.

The museum scenes were filmed at the Walters Art Museum, where Luther Whitney's character is copying a painting by El Greco entitled 'Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata'.

The film was shot between June and August 1996, with locations in Washington D.C., including the apartment of journalist Christopher Hitchens.

Absolute Power marked the last screen appearance of actor E. G. Marshall, who played the billionaire Walter Sullivan.

The soundtrack was released on March 11, 1997. The theme 'Kate's Theme' was composed by Clint Eastwood himself and arranged by Lennie Niehaus, who also wrote and arranged the remaining tracks.

The film earned 16.8 million dollars in its opening weekend, finishing second behind the special re-release of Star Wars, and totaled 92.8 million dollars worldwide against a budget of 50 million.

In Italy, the film topped the box office for nine consecutive weeks.
