The series was created by Mike White, who studied in elementary and high school in Pasadena, California, the city that gives its name to the series.

Actress and director Diane Keaton directed the pilot episode and also served as one of the executive producers of the series.

Although 13 episodes were filmed, only four were originally broadcast in the United States in 2001 before cancellation.

Despite being critically acclaimed, the series had only 4.3 million viewers in the USA.

It was speculated that the low audience was due to the premiere occurring two weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, which would have driven away the American public from a plot with a dark and cynical atmosphere.

Only at the end of 2005 was the series broadcast in its entirety for the first time in the United States, on the cable channel SoapNet.

Between 2003 and 2004, the 13 episodes were broadcast in various countries, such as Romania, Bulgaria, Colombia, Croatia, Mexico, Serbia, Slovakia, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Russia, South Africa, Israel and China, and the series arrived in Belgium in 2010.
