In 1975, Alan Reed revealed in an interview with radio historian Chuck Schaden that Hanna-Barbera was developing a series about the adventures of Fred and Barney as Bedrock police officers, the 'Bedrock Cops' segment.

Alan Reed, the original voice of Fred Flintstone, died on June 14, 1977 while the cartoon was still in development, and was replaced by Henry Corden.

The 'Captain Caveman' segment functions as a prequel to the previous Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels series, showing the character's time in Bedrock before being frozen in ice.

In the 'Captain Caveman' segment, editor-in-chief Lou Granite is based on the character Lou Grant, and Chester's disguise (glasses and tie) is a reference to Clark Kent's secret identity used by Superman.

The 'Pebbles, Dino and Bamm-Bamm' segment is a Flintstones-themed adaptation of the 'teenagers solving mysteries with a pet animal' format popularized by Scooby-Doo and its 1970s spin-offs.

The character Cavemouse, from the 'Dino and Cavemouse' segment, was developed and had its story edited by renowned animation director Tex Avery, this being his last project before his death.

The series brought together older characters, such as Penny, Wiggy, Moonrock and Schleprock (from The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show from 1971 and The Flintstone Comedy Hour from 1972), the Shmoo (from The New Shmoo from 1979) and Captain Caveman (from his own series in 1977 on ABC).

In 1982, reruns of the series were repackaged for two seasons under the title The Flintstone Funnies, which became the final incarnation of The Flintstones broadcast on NBC.
