Lost in Austen

Lost in Austen was written by Guy Andrews as a whimsical adaptation of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, imagining a modern young Londoner entering the plot of the novel.

Actor Elliot Cowan, who played Mr. Darcy, received the invitation for the role while performing Henry V in theater, and said he wasn't worried because he considered the series had iconography similar to that of theatrical canon.

Alex Kingston, who played Mrs. Bennet, built the character as an unhappy woman in marriage, whose husband is emotionally absent, which would explain her nervous and agitated behavior.

Christina Cole (Caroline Bingley) and protagonist Jemima Rooper (Amanda Price) had already worked together on the supernatural series Hex, from Sky One, before reuniting in Lost in Austen.

Scenes took place in various real locations, including a former Yorkshire Bank building in Wakefield for Amanda's workplace, Cannon Hall near Barnsley, Bramham Park, parts of York, Leeds city markets and Harewood House mansion, which served as the setting for Pemberley.

The song that Caroline Bingley plays and sings on the piano at Rosings in the third episode was composed by Mozart and is called 'Lied der Freiheit' (K506).

The North American version of the miniseries, compiled as a film on DVD, removed the scene in which Amanda sings 'Downtown' and also eliminated a cell phone ring based on the soundtrack of the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

In February 2009 it was reported that a film version was in development, with Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes as executive producer; screenwriter Nora Ephron worked on the project until her death in 2012, when Carrie Brownstein was invited to finish the screenplay.
